As a secretary you're the transfer hub for the entire business. On the one hand, you're the first point of contact for staff and people from outside whilst, on the other, responsible for coordinating appointments for all levels of management. Staff bring their wishes and concerns of all kinds to the secretary in the first instance, covering everything from safety at work through complaints / suggestions to personal matters. Nowadays a secretary is responsible for wide-ranging areas such as ‘TTC' (managing timetable, telephone and making coffee).

What qualifications and experiences are desirable?
Alongside solid EDP knowledge, my prior experience in sales as a trained retail purchaser is advantageous. This gave me the necessary instinctive skills for dealing with certain interpersonal situations.

What career paths are possible?
I began in sales with secretarial work and was responsible for collecting all staff data. After some time, the opportunity came up to take over the position of directors' secretary. In order best to prepare myself for this challenge, I attended several relevant courses.

The position of secretary involves a lot of trust. You have to learn to deal with information confidentially and discreetly. The work involves a lot of variety, given that you have a great deal of contact with diverse people (colleagues, suppliers, customers, business partners etc.).
